Knights' Flowers, Saints' Simkins honored by N.SB County Round Table

The Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Roundtable saluted the area's finest athletes one final time in 2012.

Santa Maria High's senior point guard Jordan (JT) Simkins earned Male Athlete of the Week. Simkins scored 44 total points in three games to lead the Saints to a third place finish at the Coast Union Tournament last week. Simkins scored 21 points against Coast, 14 points against Stockdale and 9 points in the third place game.

Simkins is a big reason why the Saints are off to their best start in years at 7-2. They had 5 wins all of last season. "We have a lot of defensive anchors like Devon Brock. Our team is very scrappy because we're not the biggest. So we hustle a lot. Santa Maria right now we're doing good. There's a lot of opportunities to make something happen," said Simkins, who is averaging 16 points, 2 assists and 2 steals per game.

St. Joseph point guard Kaitlyn Flowers was named Female Athlete of the Week. The junior averaged 26.5 points per game to lead the Lady Knights to a third place finish at a tournament last week with a 3-1 overall mark. Flowers scored 32 points in the third place game against against host Rio Mesa. "It was a really tough team. We had lost to them two times last year so it was more of a redemption win for us. We're growing more and more as a team each day and each day at practice and I think it's going to be a good year," said Flowers.

The Knights are off to a 4-3 start.

After a three week break due to the Winter Break, the NSBCART reconvenes on January 7.
