Known felon accused of leading deputies on pursuit

A known felon is back behind bars after allegedly leading deputies on a pursuit through parts of Santa Barbara County Friday afternoon.

Around 12:30 p.m., deputies with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office tried to stop Binisio Nicolas Pereda, 26, from Lompoc, near the Santa Barbara Airport.

Officials say he took off, exiting on Highway 217 before driving the wrong way on Highway 101.

Several witnesses directed deputies to a mobile home park on Ward Drive, where officials say he abandoned his vehicle and ran away.

Pereda eventually surrendered after law enforcement located him swimming to shore in a nearby lagoon.

He was treated at a nearby hospital before being booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on several offenses and felony warrants.

Many law enforcement agencies have been looking for Pereda for the past few weeks.

Law enforcement from the California Highway Patrol, U.C.S.B. Police Department, county probation, Santa Barbara Police Department, and Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Deputies helped in the search. The County Air Support Unit and canine team also assisted.
