Krieghoff a national leader in second season with Mustangs

Cal Poly women's soccer player Elise Krieghoff has scored ten goals in four games. The sophomore leads the nation in goals per game and with an assist, in points per contest as well. Rachel Daly from St. Johns University is the only player in the nation with more goals than Krieghoff (11), but Daly has played six games.

"She's just getting in the right place at the right time" said head coach Alex Crozier. "I think she just knows how to be in the right place at the right time" said senior teammate Kacey Held. Krieghoff's coach and teammate don't say that to insinuate she's getting lucky, being in the right place at the right time is a skill. "You just have to stay focused on all parts of the game. Any time you get the ball it's an opportunity to put the ball away. If I want to score I got to make sure that I'm in that right spot" said Krieghoff who's helped the Mustangs to a 4-0 start.

Last year, Krieghoff led the Big West in goals while earning the conference Freshman of the Year award. Krieghoff was able to score 11 times as a freshman despite missing a game because of the flu and three games because of Mononucleosis. "When I got it I didn't take care of myself and when I went home to try and recover it was already too late. It was just a hard year for me last year" said Krieghoff.

Krieghoff is at Cal Poly in part because of Held, the two played together at Buchanan High School in Clovis. "I was always visiting her and seeing the team. I was always around and finally coming here it was like a relief, I was so excited to come and play for this team" said Krieghoff.

Krieghoff has scored ten of Cal Poly's 15 goals this season as the Mustangs own wins against Loyola Marymount (3-0), CSU-Bakersfield (5-2), Sacramento State (4-0) and San Jose State (3-0). The road gets tougher this weekend, Cal Poly plays at 10th ranked Baylor on Friday and at 20th ranked Texas A&M on Sunday.

The all-time record for most goals in a season at the Division-1 level is 39. Krystal Sandza holds the Big West record for most goals in a season. Sandza scored 25 for UCSB in 2002.
