LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles County is planning a crackdown on maternity tourism as illegal birthing hotels breed complaints.

The Los Angeles Times says residents have filed 60 complaints in the last month alone. They were noted in a report from the county Planning Department, which also outlined plans to step up enforcement against the hotels.

Authorities say women from Asia are coming to the U.S. to give birth so that their children will be U.S. citizens. They pay thousands to stay in homes that have been illegally converted to boarding facilities.

In November, authorities say they discovered a single-family home in Chino Hills that housed 30 Chinese women.

It was shut down after the city sued the owners.
