LA pair plead not guilty in murder-for-hire scheme

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A Los Angeles-area mother and a family friend have pleaded not guilty to hiring a hit man to kill her daughter's boyfriend.

City News Service reports 45-year-old Adelina Cristobal of Lawndale and 34-year-old Antonio Quevedo of Hawthorne entered their pleas Friday.

They are charged with using interstate commerce facilities - the cellphone - for murder-for-hire

Prosecutors say the pair offered to pay $6,500 to have the boyfriend "disappear," but it turned out that the hit man they hired was an undercover officer working for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with LAPD's Harbor Division.

Courts documents say Cristobal wanted the boyfriend killed because he owed her money, was romantically involved with her daughter and had allegedly threatened her husband.

Trial is set for April 2.
