Behind Hannah Gilbert and company, the Morro Bay High girls basketball team defeated second place Templeton 59-29 on Wednesday to clinch its third-straight Los Padres League title. The Pirates extended their league winning streak to 25 games and improved to 10-0 in LPL action and 17-3 overall.
The Lady Pirates' zone defense wreaked havoc on the Eagles, who trailed from nearly start to finish. Templeton fell to 7-2 in league and 18-4 overall. Both of the Eagles' league defeats came at the hands of the Pirates.
Future Mustang Hannah Gilbert once again proved too tough to contain. She led the Pirates with 18 points and 9 rebounds. Kara Schmidt dropped in 12 points for Morro Bay. Junior guard Sierra Schwellenbach nearly scored a triple-double finishing with 10 rebounds, 7 assists and 8 steals.
Morro Bay plays Santa Maria on Friday. A win in its final two league games or a Templeton loss will give the Pirates the outright title. Templeton travels to Cabrillo Friday. The Conquistadores beat Santa Maria on Wednesday 45-42.
