Legend in the Making: Templeton lead-off hitter Michael Frigon

The job of a lead-off man in baseball is to get on, nobody on the Central Coast does that better than Templeton's Michael Frigon. The senior is batting .536 and has an on-base percentage of .624. That means 62 percent of the time he steps to the plate, he gets on base with a hit or a walk. "Without him in that lead-off spot doing what he does. I don't see this team having the success that we had offensively. I mean he's on base so much" said Templeton head coach Brad Macomber. The Eagles were 17-4 this season and won the Los Padres League with a 10-2 mark.

Frigon's speed has helped him avoid a slump this season as infield hits and bunts have helped him stay confident. "He can drop a bunt down any time and if he can drop a bunt down and get on base with a base hit that gets the team going and it also gets him between the ears right back where he likes to be" said Macomber.

Frigon has great fundamentals with his swing and a great sense of the strike zone. He says he doesn't go to the plate thinking about hitting a home run. "Just realizing that I don't really need to swing too hard just need to find the meet of the bat on the ball and good things will happen" said Frigon.

Frigon has stole 24 bases in 21 games, only being caught once. He also has 29 runs scored and has only stuck out five times. "A lot of practice over the off-season and I really found my swing at the beginning of the season that allowed me to get off to a good start and allowed me to ride that all the way through" said Frigon.

Frigon will play at Westmont College (NAIA) in Santa Barbara next year, he didn't get much interest from other schools. "They see a skinny 145 pound kid and think no he can't do it but I just have to prove them wrong" said Frigon.

Templeton opens up the Division 5 playoffs at home on Thursday.
