Legends in the Making: Amber Buchanan

MORRO BAY, Calif. - Amber Buchanan had always wanted to be part of the Morro Bay football team. So, the summer before her senior year, despite never having played organized football in her life, she decided to do it.

"This is a guys sport, not a girl's sport," said Buchanan, "but I'm not going to act like a girl on the field."

Morro Bay head coach Jack Greer admits, there was some initial skepticism from his team, but she's quickly established herself as just another player on Morro Bay's playoff bound team.

"I wasn't sure she was going to stick it out, but she's gone through everything," said Greer, "she's gone through our weightlifting, our conditioning, everything. To the best of my knowledge, she hasn't missed one thing and you can't say that about everybody."

CIF rules don't allow seniors, like Amber, to play on junior varsity teams. So, while she has played some, as a varsity player with no playing experience, she hasn't played much.

"I think when I get hit, or something goes wrong, or I don't play. You know what, why did i come out here? But I'm giving it my all, I'm part of the team, and I'm doing this for them and for me."

Amber says the support she's gotten from her team has encouraged her to keep playing, and she has no regrets about her experience playing varsity football.

"I think it helps me to be stronger and whenever something hits me in life, like a tackle, just get back up."

Morro Bay hosts Buena in the opening round of the CIF playoffs on Friday.
