Legends in the Making: Cuesta's Correa, Mininni close in on state titles

Five Cuesta College wrestlers will compete in the Community College State Tournament this weekend in Lemoore, including two from Central Coast high school's. Sophomore Matthew Correa and freshman Dolin Mininni are both ranked fifth in the state going into the meet. Correa graduated from Righetti High School, Mininni from Morro Bay.

Correa placed seventh as a junior and sixth as a senior at the High School State tournament wrestling for the Warriors. He finished third at the Southern California Regional last weekend. Correa entered the Regional Tournament as the top ranked 125 pound wrestler in the state. He dropped to fifth in the state after the tournament.

"He's a pretty stingy wrestler. He's hard to take down, I think Matt's biggest nemesis is going to be himself and kind of preparing himself mentally for each match. He's really hard to score on so it gives almost anybody fits" said head coach Joe Dansby about Correa.

Correa said he lost his focus in the semifinal match he lost at the Regional Tournament and that he's not going to let that happen again.

"I've beat pretty much everyone at my weight and I know if I come out to wrestle I'll beat everyone" said Correa.

Mininni won four Los Padres League championships at Morro Bay. "He kind of surprises you at first. Where he surprises me is his mental game, he's pretty mentally tough" said Dansby about Mininni.

Mininni is ranked fifth in the state at 149 pounds. He also finished third at the Regional Tournament.

"I'd like to be an All-American which is top four at the state meet, that's my realistic goal this year" said Mininni.

The State Tournament starts on Friday morning and runs through Saturday night.

The last time a Cuesta wrestler won a State title was Jacob Starr in the 195 pound weight class in 2005.
