Local agencies hosting Peace Officer Memorial Services Wednesday

As President Obama speaks at the 32nd annual Peace Officer Memorial Service on Capitol Hill Wednesday morning, services honoring law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty last year are also taking place on the Central Coast.

A ceremony is being held next to the Santa Maria Police Department to remember the two officers who died in California last year.

There will be a flag raising ceremony and 21-gun salute. Santa Maria Police Chief Ralph Martin will be the keynote speaker.

The Santa Maria Police Department and Santa Maria Police Officers Associations are co-hosting the event, which begins at 10:30 a.m.

In San Luis Obispo, another service is happening at Mission Plaza.

It begins at 10 a.m. and is being hosted by the San Luis Obispo County Criminal Justice Administrator's Association, the San Luis Obispo Police Department, and the City of San Luis Obispo.

Various county law enforcement and criminal justice agencies will be at the event, which includes a caravan of county law enforcement vehicles.

President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as a day to honor those killed in the line of duty.

Flags should be flown at half staff Wednesday.
