Local officials honor Caltrans workers killed on the job

Those who earn their living working our highways put their lives on the line doing so. Monday in San Luis Obispo there was a memorial for those who were killed doing their jobs.

Santa Maria Mayor Alice Patino joined representatives from construction companies and the California Highway Patrol honoring the employees who died.

Toses for each were placed on a memorial rock that listed their names.

This year's ceremony was a bit tough for some because of some recent losses.

Colin Jones of Caltrans told KSBY News, "It really hits home today because last week we lost 2 workers up in Siskeyou county who were rock scaling so it just brings out the dangers our highway workers face everyday."

178 Caltrans workers have been killed on the job including 8 in this district. Caltrans reminds everyone to "Slow for the Cone Zone."
