Locals plant trees at Whale Rock Reservoir

Several local organizations came together Saturday to help the environment.
The local non-profit, One Cool Earth, teamed up with the Grizzly Academy from Camp San Luis and the Environmental Council of Cal Poly to plant trees on Saturday.
Volunteers worked along the banks of Whale Rock Reservoir near Cayucos. The reservoir supplies drinking water to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Camp San Luis, Cuesta College, Cayucos, and the California Men's Colony. It is also an important trout spawning and fishing location.
The trees will help reduce erosion in the area. "If the dirt is going downhill into the lake, it's destroying this very valuable little road, which it does frequently in the winter. At the same time, it's putting a lot of dirt into a very valuable reservoir that we don't want to be there," said Lionel Johnston, a volunteer for One Cool Earth.
According to representatives at One Cool Earth, hundreds of trout were taken from the reservoir during fishing season, which ended November 15th.
The trees planted at today's event were grown at Cal Poly by the Sierra Club Student Coalition and One Cool Earth.
