Los Alamos' Luke Branquinho regains top spot in world standings at NFR

Central Coast resident Luke Branquinho returned to the top of the world standings on Monday at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Los Alamos native finished second in round five of steer wrestling with a time of 3.9 seconds. He earned $14,429 in prize money to up his 2012 total to $128,043. The reigning world champion regained the top spot on the money list over two-time champion Dean Gorsuch, who fell to second with $116,067. Gorsuch finished 8th on Monday. Ethan Touhvenell is in third place with nearly $112,500.

Branquinho won round four on Sunday with a time of 3.3 seconds to move from fifth place to second place in the overall standings.

The 32 year old won world titles in 2004, 2008 and 2011. He has made more than $1,800,000 in prize money in his career.

Also competing this week in Las Vegas is Paso Robles native Dugan Kelly. He and his partner Turtle Powell finished ninth in team roping with a time of 9.1 seconds. Kelly and Powell are 15th in the overall standings.
