Alex Maier never gave up on a ball kicked by a Lompoc defender toward the Braves' goalie. Maier was rewarded for his hustle by scoring the first and only goal of the game in the San Luis Obispo boys soccer team's 1-0 win over Lompoc in a non-league game on Tuesday.
The Tigers, who are dealing with injuries to as many as seven starters, improved to 4-2-1 on the season. San Luis Obispo is ranked #7 this week in the latest CIF Division 5 coaches poll.
The Tigers squandered multiple scoring opportunities. One shot hit off the cross bar, while several other players missed open shots.
The Braves had a few opportunities as well in the match. Tiger goalie Michael Lambert made several nice stops and received assistance when a shot from the Braves on a free kick hit off the crossbar and was cleared away by the defense.
