VENTURA, Calif. (AP) - A Southern California man facing 25 years to life in prison for hatching a murder plot has committed suicide in his jail cell.

Ventura County sheriff's investigators say 57-year-old Barry Carlisi hanged himself on Monday. There are no details on what was used in the hanging.

Carlisi was scheduled to be sentenced next week.

Carlisi was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to kidnap, solicitation of murder and possession of marijuana for sale while armed with a weapon.

The Ventura County Star (http://bit.ly/YAdlkP) says Carlisi hired friend Ruben Szerlip to kill Tom MacAllister, who was married to Carlisi's niece and refused to give up custody of a daughter.

Szerlip notified police and he secretly recorded Carlisi when the murder plot was discussed in a Port Hueneme restaurant.
