Man receives third strike for Santa Barbara market robbery

The Santa Barbara County District Attorney announced Tuesday that Michael Sastre, 33, was sentenced to 30 years to life in state prison on Monday, after pleading guilty to second-degree robbery and arson of personal property.

The DA says Sastre was released from prison on January 24, 2013, after serving 12 years for attempting to murder his ex-girlfriend. Within hours of his release, Sastre traveled from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara, where he attempted to rob the Arco AM/PM market at the corner of State Street and Ontare Road. When the clerk refused to give Sastre any money, Sastre began setting fire to the merchandise and ran off. Police arrested him less than a block away.

The DA says Sastre's life sentence is the result of two prior strike convictions in Los Angeles County. One was for assault with a deadly weapon, and the other was for attempted murder with the use of a knife.
