CARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) - Authorities in San Diego County are searching for a man who jumped into the ocean from a drug-smuggling boat.
An air and sea search is under way off of South Ponto State Beach in Carlsbad where a small panga boat landed shortly before 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.
U.S. Border Patrol spokesman Jacopo Bruni says agents seized nearly 3,000 pounds of marijuana from the boat.
He says three people on board jumped into the water but two swam back to shore and were treated at a hospital for hypothermia.
The third is being sought.
The Coast Guard says someone in the chilly waters could be expected to survive about 11 hours.
At least 4 people are known to have died in sea smuggling attempts on California's Pacific shores since January 2010.
