Radiation therapy is often used to control pain in cancer patients whose disease has spread to their bones, but a new study confirms most patients receive unnecessary treatments that drive up health care costs and don't prolong survival.
Previous research has shown a single session of radiation provides just as much pain relief for terminal cancer patients as multiple sessions.
New data show only 3% of patients in the study received just a single treatment and nearly half underwent more than ten treatments.
Researchers say single radiation treatments should become routine practice for pain control, saving patients from unnecessary costs and discomfort.
