Martin Resorts staff make sure Christmas comes to a local family in need

Employees at Martin Resorts have been busy. Not only are they shopping, wrapping and getting ready for Christmas celebrations of their own, but they're making sure a local family of 7 has reason to celebrate as well.

For the last 5 years, they've worked through local agencies to adopt a family in need, and fill the void that can exist when you hit a rough patch in life. "We have the experts that do the initial interviews and then we meet with them, just one or two of us, just to see that they're people who are working and trying to help themselves, and they just need that extra helping hand in a time of need." says Margaret Johnson, CEO of Martin Resorts.

This year, it's a local couple with five kids between infancy and 10 years old, and their rough patch has left them with a lot of voids. "We're a hotel so we were able to take care of the bedding needs, which was important. They had nothing." says Johnson. Not anymore.

The Moreno family was overwhelmed when the Martin Resorts gang arrived with plenty of presents, hand wrapped and ready to open on Christmas morning. "It means we have a Christmas." says Beatris Moreno. "We appreciate it so much."

Johnson says employees get as much out of it as those on the receiving end. "It's kind of taken on it's own life. The staff gets really excited. In fact, we've stayed in touch with the family from 2 years ago. She even sent us a check because she got back on her feet and donated toward this family. So that was a huge motivation for us this year."

And they're already thinking of next year. Johnson is challenging other hotels and hotel chains on the Central Coast to adopt a family of their own in 2014.
