Shortstop Kryn Masutani further cemented her spot in the Cougar record books by going 7 for 8 with 2 home runs and 9 RBI to lead the Cuesta College softball team to a doubleheader sweep over LA Pierce on Thursday afternoon. The Cougars won 11-3 and 21-3, both games were called after five innings.
Cuesta improved to 10-6 in Western State Conference play and 18-19 overall. LA Pierce fell to 0-14 in league and 5-25 on the season.
Masutani continued to pile up some historic numbers. She tied the program record set in 2005 with her 11th home run of the season and tied a record with 31 stolen bases. She also broke a 14 year old record with her 61st RBI of the season. The shortstop already extended her own record for most doubles in a season with 22.
Masutani singled in the first run of the day for the Cougars and later launched a 2-run home run in the third inning. Cuesta scored 6 runs thanks to 4 errors in the first inning. The sophomore from Hawaii went 3 for 4 with 3 runs and 3 RBI in the opener. Jasmine Singh, a Morro Bay High graduate, went 2 for 3 with 2 runs and one RBI. Summer Best added 2 hits in the opener.
Christina Corsaletti won the opener with 4 innings pitched. She allowed 3 hits and 1 unearned run and walked 5 with 4 strikeouts.
Masutani went 4 for 4 with 4 runs scored, 6 RBI and her second home run of the day, a 3-run shot in the third inning of the second game. Corsaletti went 3 for 4 and Mackenzie Brewster went 3 for 3 with 3 runs and 2 RBI.
Victoria Roberts improved to 5-7 on the season allowing 5 hits and striking out 4 in 5 innings of work. She allowed 3 unearned runs.
LA Pierce committed 6 errors in the first game and 9 more in the second.
Cuesta trails first place and 11-3 Ventura by 2 games.
