Nate Tayco scored four touchdowns and Rio Hondo Prep's defense shutout the potent Mission Prep offense to come-from-behind to beat the Royals 28-21 to capture its second-straight CIF Northeast Division title Friday night in Arcadia.
The Royals led 21-14 at the half on a last-second touchdown catch by Joey Hall, his second TD reception of the game.
The Royals scored first on a 60 yard touchdown strike from quarterback Tyler Baty to Hall in the first quarter. Rio Hondo Prep scored on a 1 yard run from Tayco to tie it 14-7. He scored later in the quarter to give the host Kares a 14-7 lead after the first quarter.
Patrick Laird intercepted a Rio Hondo pass and ended up cashing it in with a 5 yard TD run in the second quarter to tie the game 14-14. Baty hit Hall for the 24th and final time of the season to close out the first half.
Rio Hondo outscored Mission 14-0 in the second half behind two TD runs from Tayco. Mission had the ball and was driving and at the Rio Hondo 21 yard line with about five minutes to play in the fourth quarter trying to tie the game. But Baty fumbled the snap and Rio Hondo Prep recovered it. The Kares ran out the clock to seal the victory.
Tayco finished with 173 yards and 4 touchdowns on 28 carries.
Baty completed 14 of his 25 passes for 230 yards and 2 touchdowns. Hall caught 10 passes for 166 yards and 2 TDs. Michael Cardwell rushed for 69 yards on 11 carries, while Laird ran for 66 yards on 16 carries.
Rio Hondo won its 14th CIF title in program history and second-straight championship. The Kares also avenged an earlier season 47-14 loss to Mission Prep.
The Royals finished the season 11-2 after making their first appearance in the CIF title game since 1964. Baty finished his incredible senior year with 45 touchdown passes, while Hall ended up with 24 TD catches and 26 overall.
