Mom accused of faking son's illness to solicit donations

(WVTM) An Alabama mother is facing charges after she told her community and her son's school that the boy was terminally ill with colon cancer in order to collect gifts.

Sandra Lloyd told caring citizens her child needed to be transported to St. Jude's Cancer Center for treatment.

Her alleged lies netted her money, gas cards and a vehicle to take her supposedly sick son to the hospital.

Sheriff's deputies say Lloyd's lies were uncovered when she was arrested for a minor traffic charge. Community members called the boys father to make sure the child would still be able to make it St. Jude's for care. The boy's father was shocked to hear that Lloyd had told friends their child was ill. The father quickly corrected the story.

The Sheriff's office arrested Lloyd for first-degree theft of property. Officials expect more charges could be filed.

School officials had no comment on the situation.
