More information released in death of two pedestrians on Highway 154 Friday night

The California Highway Patrol says the two women killed Friday night on Highway 154 had gotten out of their vehicle for unknown reasons, and were in the road when they were hit.

Officials say around 11:45 p.m., one of the women was hit by a vehicle traveling eastbound, and the other woman was hit by a van traveling westbound.

They say they found the driver of the van, 48-year-old Martin Macarena of San Luis Obispo, later that night at the Chumash Casino.

He was arrested for felony hit and run.

The other driver stayed at the scene and was not arrested.

Witnesses at the scene told officers that several vehicles traveling westbound may have hit one of the women.

The two women were pronounced dead at the scene, and alcohol and drugs do not appear to have played a role in the crash.

Officers are asking anyone that thinks they may have been involved in the collision or witnessed the collision to contact the San Luis Obispo Dispatch Center at (805) 593-3333 during the weekend, or the Buellton area office at (805) 688-5551 Monday through Friday.
