Morro Bay loses tournament opener to undefeated Garces 53-44

Despite 17 points from Sierra Schwellenbach, the Morro Bay girls basketball team dropped the opener to Garces 53-44 in the 7th annual Perry Ford Holiday Tournament on Wednesday night at Morro Bay High.

The Pirates fell to 1-1, while the Rams stayed undefeated. Garces won Atascadero High's tournament last weekend.

The Rams scored the first nine points of the game. Schwellenbach hit a three from the corner at the end of the first quarter for the Pirates' first points of the game. She stole a pass and scored a layup and was fouled to start the second quarter to make it a 9-6 game after the free throw. However, that's as close as the host Pirates would get.

Rachel West led the Rams with 35 points.

Cal Poly-bound Hannah Gilbert struggled out of the gates with the Rams' inside pressure on her, but she finished with 13 points.

Morro Bay looks to bounce back against Ridgeview at 8pm on Thursday at Morro Bay High.
