The Morro Bay boys basketball team opened defense of its Los Padres League title with a 43-40 win at Nipomo in both teams' league openers on Thursday night.
The Pirates improved to 1-0 in league and 5-5 overall, while the Titans dropped to 0-1 in league and 1-9 overall.
Morro Bay, which shared the LPAL title last season with Cabrillo and won it outright in 2010-11, led by as many as six points in the third quarter, before settling for a 35-33 lead to start the fourth quarter.
The Titans kept responding to Morro Bay buckets to stay close, but a bucket by Elijah Lampley gave the Pirates a 5 point lead with around two minutes to play. Lampley, a 6-1 junior, along with junior guard Xavier Alfaro led the Pirates with 13 points apiece.
Nipomo was led by sophomore guard Freddy Ruiz, who poured in a game-high 21 points.
