Morro Bay, Templeton girls open LPL play with convicing wins

The two favorites to contend for the Los Padres League girls basketball title this season, Morro Bay and Templeton, cruised in their league openers on Tuesday night.

Mari Stewart recorded another double-double to lead the Templeton girls basketball team to a 52-37 Los Padres League opening victory at Lompoc on Tuesday night.

The Eagles improved to 8-1 overall and 1-0 in league, while Lompoc dropped to 4-5 overall and 0-1 in LPAL play.

Marissa Torres poured in 15 points for the Eagles, while Autumn Russell added 8.

The Morro Bay girls scored the first 27 points of the game in a 57-16 victory at home over Nipomo.

The two-time defending LPL champion Pirates improved to 6-3 on the season and 1-0 in league, while the Titans fell to 4-5 and 0-1.

Hannah Gilbert and Sierra Schwellenbach each outscored the entire Titan team. Gilbert, the Cal Poly recruit, scored 17 points, while Schwellenbach poured in a game-high 18 points.

Diana Krichevsky ended Nipomo's drought with two buckets early in the second quarter for the Titans.
