Oscar Munoz scored twice in the first half to lead the Arroyo Grande High boys soccer team to a 2-0 win over Nogales in the first round of the CIF Division 5 playoffs on Friday.
The Eagles improved to 17-10-1 and advance to next Wednesday's second round.
The senior opened the scoring in the 7th minute when he stole the ball from a Nogales player and dribbled it inside the box and created some space before sending the ball over the goalie's head to give AG an early 1-0 lead. Munoz's second goal came in the 35th minute as a result of persistence. Chris Herrera led Munoz into the box with a pass. Munoz's first shot ricocheted right back to him and he snuck it by the diving keeper.
Munoz was the hero offensively, but sophomore goalie Marco Figueroa provided a big emotional boost in the early moments. After an AG defender was called for a foul inside the box, Nogales received a penalty kick just 1:50 into the match. The Nogales player sent a liner toward the bottom right corner of the goal but a diving Figueroa hauled it in to keep it scoreless.
