Mustangs beat Hawaii to move into second place

Junior post Molly Schlemer led the way with 20 points and 12 rebounds as Cal Poly beat Hawaii, 47-43. The Mustangs passed the Rainbow Wahine in the Big West standings with the win. Cal Poly is now 10-4 in the conference, Hawaii drops to 10-5. The Mustangs stay a half game back of first place Pacific, the Tigers won at home against UC-Riverside to improve to 11-4 in the Big West.

Cal Poly held Hawaii to just 19 percent shooting in the first half, taking a 28-15 lead to the break. The Mustangs were ahead 36-23 early in the second half before the Rainbow Wahine went on a 16-2 run to take a 39-38 lead. The lead switched hands four times before Ariana Elegado hit a three-pointer with 1:54 remaining to give Cal Poly a 45-43 lead. The Mustangs scored the only two points of the game from there.

Elegado, the sophomore guard, scored 12 points but it was Schlemer's dominance inside that was the difference. The Righetti High School graduate shot 9-13 from the field and helped the Mustangs to a 30-14 scoring advantage in the paint.

Cal Poly has won six of its last seven games and is now 7-0 in Big West home games. Next up for the Mustangs is a Thursday game at UC-Riverside. With four games left if Cal Poly can win out it will earn at least a share of a third straight Big West title.
