The Big Sky Conference selected Cal Poly linebacker Nick Dzubnar as one of its three Defensive Players of the Week for the final weekend of the 2012 regular season. It marked the second-straight week a Cal Poly linebacker has won the award. Senior Kennith Jackson won the award last week.
The 6-2, 240 pound Dzubnar led the team with 9 tackles, forced one fumble and returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown in the Mustangs' 42-34 win over Northern Arizona. The win helped Cal Poly secure a share of the Big Sky regular season title and an at-large berth in the FCS playoffs. The sophomore's pick-six gave Cal Poly the lead for good 14-7. His forced fumble on Cal Poly's 1 yard line stopped a NAU scoring opportunity.
Dzubnar shared the weekly honor with Montana State defensive end Caleb Schreibeis and Northern Colorado defensive back Marcel Gibbons.The sophomore was also named a College Sporting News national all-star, College Football Performance Awards national linebacker of the week and College Sports Madness national FCS defensive player of the week.
For the season, Dzubnar has a team-leading 97 tackles (54 solo), including 5.5 tackles for lost yardage and one sack. He also has notched five pass breakups, forced two fumbles and recovered two others.
