The Cal Poly baseball team scored four runs in the first inning and went on to beat Santa Clara, 7-2. The Mustangs, ranked 16th by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper improve to 25-9 after the non-conference win. The Broncos drop to 9-25 and 0-2 against Cal Poly this season. The Mustangs won, 5-4 in Santa Clara on February 18.
Sophomore center fielder Jordan Ellis had three of Cal Poly's seven hits, including a run-scoring triple in the seventh inning. Senior second baseman Denver Chavez was 2-4 with a single and double to lift his batting average to .403. Chavez scored three times. Junior third baseman Jimmy Allen plated him in the first inning and added a run-scoring groundout in the second. Sophomore right fielder Nick Torres produced his Big West-leading sixth sacrifice fly of the season in the seventh inning.
Freshman right-hander Casey Bloomquist struck out a career-high eight over 6 1/3 innings to improve to 2-0 - earning the win for a second straight Tuesday. Bloomquist allowed two runs and four hits with two walks. Danny Zandona and Taylor Chris combined to pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief. Cal Poly's three pitchers struck out 12 batters, lifting its total for the season to 310. The school record is 488 by the 2004 Mustangs.
Santa Clara scored its only runs of the game in the seventh, chasing Bloomquist, on pinch hitter C.J. Jacobe's two-run double to right field. The Broncos were held to just four hits.
Cal Poly will host fourth ranked Cal State Fullerton Friday-Sunday. The first place Titans are two games ahead of the second place Mustangs. First pitch Friday and Saturday nights will be at 6:00pm with Sunday's series finale set to start at 1:00pm.
