Mustangs upbeat headed into Big West Tournament as #2 seed

Despite missing out on a Big West regular season title and the overall number one seed, the Cal Poly women's basketball team is upbeat headed into the Big West Conference Tournament as the number two seed. As the #2 seed, Cal Poly receives an automatic berth into Friday's semifinals where it will face the highest remaining seed around 2:30 pm in the Honda Center in Anaheim.

The Mustangs finished the regular season with a 19-10 overall record and 13-5 mark in Big West play. The women finished second to 14-4 Pacific in the conference standings after falling 71-58 to Long Beach State in their regular season finale.

The Cal Poly women were tabbed fourth in the preseason coaches poll, but ended up falling just short of securing the program's third-straight regular season crown.

"We're close to a 20 win season. If anyone is disappointed I don't know what they're paying attention to because I'm really, really proud of this team. They've done an incredible job. And hopefully it's not over for us," said head coach Faith Mimnaugh. "Hopefully we're just going to keep getting after it, keep improving, doing a better job and come out on Friday whoever our opponent is and do the best job we can at representing Cal Poly," she added.

Junior center Molly Schlemer leads the team at 12.7 points per game and ranks second 6.8 rebounds. Ariana Elegado ranks second with 12 points. Senior Kayla Griffin finished the regular season tops on the team with 7.1 rebounds per game to go with 8 points and nearly 4 assists per game. Jonae Ervin averages 8 points and 4.5 assists.

Last year, Cal Poly, the top seed, lost to Long Beach State in the semifinals.
