Mustangs win 96-95 in three overtimes

The Cal Poly women's basketball team outlasted Pacific in a back and forth marathon on Saturday. The Mustangs won, 96-95 in three overtimes in front of their home fans.

Cal Poly was ahead 49-31 at the half but the Tigers won the second half, 44-28 to force overtime. Both teams scored 8 points in the first overtime and 6 in the second. The Mustangs won the third overtime, 7-6. Cal Poly junior guard Jonae Ervin made two free throws with eight seconds left in the third overtime to cap the scoring with the Mustangs up by a point.

Junior center Molly Schlemer led the Mustangs with 28 points, the Righetti High School graduate made 13 of her 17 shots. Schlemer also hauled down 9 rebounds in 28 minutes. Senior guard Kayla Griffin played the longest for Cal Poly. Griffin played 50 of the games 55 minutes, scoring 8 points with 13 rebounds, 11 assists and 4 steals. Senior guard Caroline Reeves scored 16 points in 49 minutes off the bench. Cal Poly played 13 different players.

Pacific forward Kendal Rodriguez logged the most minutes in the game with 53.

The Mustangs had 22 assists in their highest scoring game of the season. They shot 49 percent from the field compared to 42 percent for the Tigers.

Cal Poly improves to 9-6 overall, Pacific drops to 12-3. The Mustangs are now 3-1 in the Big West Conference, the Tigers are 2-1.

Cal Poly is off until next week when they host UCSB at 4:00pm on Saturday. The Gauchos are 2-2 in the Big West and 6-10 overall.
