Mustangs win Big West opener

Behind a dominant last 15 minutes the Cal Poly men's basketball team won 58-48 at UC-Riverside. It was the first Big West Conference game of the season for both teams.

The Mustangs trailed by 11 with 15 minutes to play before rallying to outscore the Highlanders 30-9 the rest of the way. Junior guard Kyle Odister matched a career high with four three-pointers to finish with a game-high 14 points. Odister played 25 minutes off the bench. In 24 reserve minutes, redshirt freshman guard Reese Morgan scored nine points and hauled down eight rebounds. The bench accounted for 30 of the Mustangs 58 points.

Cal Poly committed just nine turnovers, the Mustangs entered play ranked second among 345 Division I programs in turnovers per game (9.3). Both teams struggled from the floor, Cal Poly made 35 percent of its shots compared to 38 percent for UC-Riverside. The Mustangs owned a 38-30 edge in rebound's.

Cal Poly improves to 5-6 overall, 1-0 in the Big West. The Highlanders drop to 3-10, 0-1. UC Riverside has only beaten one Division 1 teams this season.

It was the 50th win in Joe Callero's four seasons as the head coach at Cal Poly.

The Mustangs will host Long Beach State on Thursday, January 3rd. The 49ers won the Big West regular season and tournament championships last year.
