Researchers have discovered a new strain of whooping cough that may be resistant to the vaccine.
The new germ was identified in France and accounts for 14% of cases in that country.
U.S. health officials are now looking into a dozen cases that may be caused by the same strain.
This new strain may explain why the nation just had its worst year for whooping cough in six decades.
Experts don't believe the new strain is more deadly, but that people are getting sicker because the vaccine does not work as well against it.
Last year, the Centers for Disease Control reported more than 41,000 cases of whooping cough, including 18 deaths.
