Nipomo and Santa Ynez soccer knocked out of CIF in second round

For the second year in a row, Palmdale ended the Nipomo High boys soccer team's season in the second round of CIF. The visiting Falcons scored three first half goals and held on to beat the Titans 3-1 in a Division 3 game on Wednesday.

The Titans finished the season 13-10-4. Palmdale, which is ranked 9th in the state and 28th in the nation according to MaxPreps, improved to 23-4-2.

The Falcons were threatening inside the box in the 18th minute when Nipomo defender Jesus Valdez was called for a foul. Oscar Torres, the team's senior co-captain, sent the penalty kick by goalie Johann Ayala to give Palmdale a 1-0 lead. Just eight minutes later, Ruben Gomez sent a cross to Erick Martinez, who bent his shot just inside the far post to make it a 2-0 game. Jose Tobar scored his 19th goal of the season in the 33rd minute to give Palmdale a 3-0 lead at the half.

The Titans got on the board in the 65th minute on a goal from Caleb Doane, assisted by Ben Jimenez.

It marked the final prep game for eight Nipomo seniors, including leading scorer Caleb Doane (13 goals, 11 assists), Jonathan Gomez (9 goals, 5 assists) and Ben Jimenez (5 goals, 13 assists).

The Central Coast went 0-4 in second round games on Wednesday. Los Padres League champion Santa Ynez lost 1-0 at home to La Sierra. Pac 7 champion Righetti fell 3-2 at home to Godinez. Arroyo Grande lost on the road at Tahquitz 1-0.
