Organizations provide activities for military veterans and family members

Military veterans and family members from all over the Central Coast were enjoying some time on the water Saturday.

The SLO County Veterans Outreach and Kayak Horizons held the event as a way to thank the service men and women for their sacrifice to our country.

"This is one of a series of outreach activities we have created for those who serve in San Luis Obispo County," says Patti Tackett of the SLO County Veterans Outreach.

They were kayaking at the Morro Bay Embarcadero.

Participants got to explore the Morro Bay Estuary and finish the day off with a pizza lunch.

Around 40 military veterans and their family members took part in Saturday's event that looked to bring them all together.

"I think it's an absolutely wonderful thing that they're doing for them. A lot of times when they come back, especially the younger veterans, they feel a little under appreciated," veteran Tom Frederick says.

The SLO County Veterans Outreach hoped to not only help create camaraderie among the veterans but also educate them.

"They get to enjoy this wonderful opportunity to get to be a part of the greater San Luis community and get to connect to services that they have earned and deserve," says Gabriel Granados of Veterans Outreach.

This was one in a series of monthly events first started around six months ago.

The free events are open to all veterans and their families.

Other activities held previously include ziplining, hiking, and climbing.

Everything is put on through the support of Central Coast businesses and the community.

"The community has been incredibly supportive. Everyone seems to want to support the veterans so they partner with us," Tackett says.
