On paper, the Pioneer Valley High football team may be young and inexperienced in the skill positions. But the Panthers have some big-time playmakers, who enjoyed success at the junior varsity level last year.
The first Friday Night Highlights Play of the Week is thanks to the Panthers. It came late in the second quarter in Pioneer Valley's season-opening game against Nipomo High. On third and 7, quarterback Andrew Madrigal dropped back to pass and hit Cody Corbin for a big gain down the sideline. Corbin, a 5-9, 165 pound senior, broke loose and sprinted for a 66 yard touchdown to give the Panthers a commanding 31-7 lead at halftime. The Panthers went on to win 37-10.
Madrigal, a 6-1, 180 pound junior, finished the game with 158 passing yards and another 108 rushing yards.
The Panthers had three touchdowns of at least 66 yards in the first half. Corbin added a 72 yard TD run, while Madrigal sprinted for an 80 yard score.
