Pediatricians: Don't ban thimerosal

Some American pediatricians say a controversial preservative used in vaccines should not be banned.
Thimerosal, which contains mercury, was removed from most vaccines in 1999 because of concerns it was linked to autism or other neurological problems.
Since then, several safety reviews have found no evidence that thimerosal causes harm to children.
Experts are not suggesting the compound be used for vaccines in the U.S., but say it could make a difference in countries with fewer resources where children still die from preventable diseases.
That's because thimerosal is used to create multi-dose vaccines, which are cheaper and easier to use, and can allow more children to be vaccinated.
