Pendley, Frigon lead Templeton by Nipomo to claim 3rd place

Mitchell Pendley drove in four runs and earned the save as the Templeton High baseball team beat Los Padres League rival Nipomo 11-8 to claim third place at Atascadero High's Easter Tournament on Wednesday.

The Eagles improved to 10-1 on the season, while Nipomo dropped to 7-8.

Nipomo started the scoring with 4 runs in the top of the first against Chase Koehler. Scott Nichols and Matt Albright hit RBI-singles. The Titans added another run on an Templeton error followed by a sacrifice fly from Robby Cano.

Templeton responded with 4 runs of its own in the bottom half against sophomore Trevor Maas. Tyrus Yamagata singled to right to score Michael Frigon, who walked and stole second base. Three batters later, Pendley crushed a high fastball over the rightfielder's head for a 2-run double. The senior later scored on a fielder's choice to tie it at 4-4.

After Koehler sent the Titans down in order in the second, the Eagles took their first lead of the game. Frigon walked, stole second, moved to third on a grounder to second base from Yamagata and scored on a double to center field by Spencer Walsh. After Garretson singled to left field, Pendley followed with a line drive basehit down the left field line that scored Walsh and Garretson to push it to a 7-4 Templeton lead after two.

Frigon reached base five times with two hits and three walks for the Eagles. He also stole three bases and scored four runs. Pendley was 2 for 4 with 4 RBI and threw 2 2/3 innings, allowing no earned runs to get the save. Walsh was 2 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI.

Nichols, a sophomore, led the Titans offensively. He was 2 for 2, one walk and two runs scored.
