Lunch was cut short today for students at Alvin Elementary School in Santa Maria. School administrators kept kids off the playgroun and indoors. They say it's a safety issue.

"When they're finished eating they can sit up on the stage and watch a movie. They can stay at their seat and visit with their friends. Usually it goes pretty quickly and then teachers come and pick them up on a rainy day," said Principal Ann Wicklund.

Still, the kids seemed to enjoy themselves as they ate and watched movies. School administrators plan to keep students off the playground until conditions improve. They say California schools are not set up to handle the severe weather.
