Smoking not only raises the risk of developing bladder cancer, it increases the chance smokers will have an aggressive form of the disease.

Previous studies have shown that smoking is one of the most common causes of bladder cancer, but not how it affects its progression.

Researchers analyzed bladder tumors from more than 200 patients and found cancers among heavy smokers were more likely to be deadly than cancers in those who smoked less or not at all.

The study also revealed that changes in certain proteins were usually present in bladder cancers that became fatal, which could help doctors identify patients that need aggressive treatment.
