Professional football players may be at an increased risk for depression later in life.
Two studies looked at the long-term effects of repeated concussions, especially related to depression.
The first found retired NFL players had higher rates of depression, mood disorders and cognitive problems than those from the general population with no history of concussions.
In a second study, researchers were able to correctly identify ex-athletes with depression by measuring white matter damage in certain regions of the brain.
