Righetti High students build TV and film skills

Producing a television news program is both a technical and creative enterprise.
In today's Local Spotlight, a Central Coast high school is giving students a head start on a career in TV.
"Most people I know watch the news every morning and rely on it to have the weather," says Righetti High junior, Anna Blundell, "... and what they're going to do and what they're going to talk about that day."
Blundell is one of scores of kids in one of the best established high school broadcasting programs on the Central Coast.
When Robert Garcia took over the program at Righetti 19 years ago, it was called "The Grapevine."
"In those days they would shoot it in segments and then edit it later," Garcia explains. "When I came here I said, 'We're going to do it live on tape.' Eventually we moved to live, period, and now we broadcast out to the school."
The kids put together four shows a week and post them online. Garcia says it's a lot of work, but the students eat it up.
"Definitely!", says Aaron Deleija. "I like the whole aspect of putting segments together and telling a story--stuff that goes on around campus as well as football games and other activities."
Alums of the Righetti program have gone on to win eight Emmys and even work on Academy Award winning films.
Students write the stories and show scripts, shoot and edit the video, and run all the studio equipment.
"My general philosophy is... it doesn't matter what you use," Garcia explains. "It's the story that's important. So, you could be shooting with some of the phones here. But if the story is interesting, people are going to watch it."
Righetti also offers a class on filmmaking and this weekend, the school is holding the 15th Annual Righetti High Film Festival.
