Allan Hancock College announced on Monday it will start a swimming team next semester. Head coach Mike Ashmore tried to spread the word around the community during the Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table in Orcutt.
Righetti High swimmer Casey Kennemann was named Female Athlete of the Week. She qualified for CIF in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:12.18. She won eight events last week in two meets for the Warriors."I swim with club and high school. It's very busy. Every morning, every afternoon, Saturday mornings for two hours, just hard work everyday," said Kennemann, who said her hard work is starting to pay off.
Pioneer Valley High's Brent Dionisio earned Male Athlete of the Week honors. He cleared 6-6 in the high jump, 40-5.25 in the triple jump and set a school record of 20-11 in the high jump during a meet against Righetti last week.
What may be even more impressive about those numbers is that Dionisio does it all on his own. "I practice pretty much all by myself, I'm independent because we don't have a jumping coach. So it's just pretty much going on youtube, watching videos and trying to learn on your own," said Dionisio, who said his goal is to clear 6-10 in the high jump this season.
