Royer, Morgan lead Mustangs to victory over defending champion LBSU

Morro Bay High graduate Dylan Royer scored 17 points and redshirt freshman Reese Morgan added a career-high 16 points to help Cal Poly beat defending Big West champion Long Beach State 79-73 Thursday night.

The Mustangs improved to 2-0 in conference and 6-6 overall.

"It's big. To start off conference play 2-0 definitely feels good. We didn't really view this game as an upset though. We viewed it as one we should win. We're really confident at home," said Royer, a senior guard, who was 5 for 8 from 3 point range.

Morgan had a career-high 16 points thanks to a 9 for 10 performance from the free-throw line.

"I haven't scored great at times this year. But the main thing is that my team and my coaches never lost confidence in me at all. I never felt pressure, I never felt down," said Morgan after his career night.

Kyle Odister had 12 points in his first start in three years, and freshman Brian Bennett added 11. Chris Eversley had eight rebounds, and Jamal Johnson had eight assists.

Cal Poly led 34-32 at halftime. Both teams shot 43 percent from the field for the game, but the Mustangs had more rebounds 38-34. The 49ers committed 13 turnovers, and the Mustangs made 19 points off those turnovers.

The Mustangs drained 10 three-point shots on the night to capture their first home win over the 49ers since 2008.

James Ennis scored 22 points to lead Long Beach State (5-8, 1-1). Keala King came off the bench to score 16 points and grab 10 rebounds. Mike Caffey had 13 points.

The Mustangs beat the 49ers for the first time in seven games overall. They host UC Irvine on Saturday at 7pm.
