San Luis Obispo High School remembers Alex Maier

San Luis Obispo High School students are remembering Alex Maier.

The 17 year old was involved in a car accident on Monday. He was pronounced dead Wednesday night.

The California Highway Patrol says Maier was driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck when it collided with another car at the Santa Rosa off-ramp southbound on Highway 101 Monday night. Emergency crews had to remove Maier from his vehicle. He was then rushed to the hospital where he later died.

San Luis Obispo High School students gathered Wednesday night to remember their friend.

"Alex would always walk pretty much right past us every morning and we would say hi," SLO High Principal Leslie O'Connor told KSBY. He said like so many other faculty and students on campus he is left trying to make sense of the tragedy.

O'Connor said this is, "A gut check in many ways, it's very somber. But at the same time we have to remember that Alex is a very wonderful young man and all the wonderful things that he does to bring joy to our campus."

The senior was one of the top scorers on the boys varsity soccer team. He wore number 23 for the Tigers.

Students showed their support for Alex and his family by flashing 23 in this picture on Tuesday. The entire student body posed for a picture Wednesday that will be given to the Maier family.

One student told KSBY, "At lunch we formed a 23 for his number just to tell him that we miss him and we're sad about this."

Friends said Alex had a great sense of humor, but an even greater smile.

Principal O'Connor says faculty echoed students' sentiments, saying, "They've all talked about how smart he is, how wonderful he is, how patient he was. You know all the good qualities you want in any young man."

The young man's Facebook page shows he touched hundreds of lives.

Counseling services and grief management services will be offered by the school for students and staff.
