Santa Barbara School District approves list of $6 million in budget cuts

The Santa Barbara School Districts' Board of Education voted Wednesday on a list that would reduce costs by some $6 million to balance out the 2010-2011 budget.
The board approved the Fiscal Solvency Plan to fill the budget gap. Some tough choices had to be made and, in the end, most of the savings will come from laying off teachers and maintenance staff. Those cuts alone add up to about $4 million.
Nearly 39 full-time teachers and six full-time maintenance workers are expected to be laid-off. The district says class sizes will increase as a result of the teacher cuts. At Dos Pueblos High School and Santa Barbara High School the class sizes will increase to 34 students per class. At San Marcos High School and the district's four junior high schools, the class size will go up to 32 students.
Other cuts include the independent study program called Home School Santa Barbara and funding for crossing guards.
