Santa Maria high school superintendent shares deep ties to Taft Union High School

The shooting in Taft hit close to home for a Central Coast administrator.

Santa Maria Joint Union High School superintendent, Dr. Mark Richardson, was previously the superintendent at Taft Union High School District.

Dr. Richardson started at the Santa Maria district four months ago but he still has strong connections to the Taft community. In fact, some of Dr. Richardson's friends work at Taft Union High School, and some of his family members attend the school.

Dr. Richardson sat down with KSBY's Nikki Ibarra on Friday to talk about school safety; however, he didn't want to talk specifically about what happened at the Kern County high school Thursday.

Dr. Richardson said Friday was an emotional day for him, and said school safety will always be a top priority. "I think what happens when these situations occur is that, you know, you redouble your efforts in terms of making sure that you have things in place that you want to have in place," said Dr. Richardson.

Due to the recent school shootings, Dr. Richardson told KSBY he's working on getting a full-time resource officer on all four high school campuses in Santa Maria.

Right now, each campus has a part-time officer.

Dr. Richardson also told KSBY he has talked to Santa Maria Police Chief Ralph Martin about the possibility of getting full-time campus officers.
