Santa Maria police arrest carjacking suspect

A Santa Maria man is behind bars after police say he attacked another man and tried to steal his car.

Police say Valente Sanchez Gonzalez, 27, was arrested after physically attacking another man who was walking to a parked car.

It happened shortly after 10:00 p.m. Monday on the 700 block of E. Boone Street.

Police received reports that two men were fighting. When they arrived at the scene, they found the two men. One of the men, who was later identified as the victim, had a serious, but non-life threatening injury. The other man, later identified as Gonzalez, was in the driver's seat of the victim's parked car.

According to police, Gonzalez was non-compliant, aggressive, and combative with officers. Police say he threatened and assaulted officers at the scene.

Police used a taser on Gonzalez. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Investigators were able to determine Gonzalez had attacked the victim who was walking to his car. He tried to take the victim's car by threatening him. The victim tried to fight off Gonzalez and a struggle ensued.

Neighbors called police, who were able to get to the scene quickly and resolve the situation.

Gonzalez was booked in the Santa Barbara County Jail for carjacking and threatening/assaulting a Peace Officer.

The victim was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and later released.
