Save of a lifetime: SLO native Seitz named MLS Humanitarian of the Year

San Luis Obispo native and professional soccer goalie Chris Seitz has been voted Major League Soccer W.O.R.K.S. Humanitarian of the Year.
Seitz, a backup goalie for FC Dallas, donated bone marrow from his pelvic bone back in September. DKMS confirmed Seitz was the best possible match for a 64 year old unidentified male diagnosed with leukemia. The 25 year old San Luis Obispo High graduate became the first professional athlete ever to donate bone marrow during the season, according to DKMS, the world's largest marrow donor center.
As a result of the invasive surgery, Seitz was forced to miss the rest of the MLS season.
Seitz, along with his then Real Salt Lake teammates, originally registered with DKMS to become bone marrow donors in 2009 as a gesture of support for teammate Andy Williams and his wife Marcia, who was battling a rare form of leukemia.
Coincidentally, Seitz's father donated bone marrow the month before to help Chris' uncle, who was also battling leukemia.
